Jane English is head of the Professional Communication Studies and Services Department (PCS) in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Associate Professor Jane English convenes all PCS courses. The purpose of the courses is to enable students to experience the usefulness of good writing and presenting in their studies and the application to their future careers. She oversees the eight consulting lecturers who train over 1000 students annually. Jane has produced and co-authored several publications and training tools including the presentation skills DVD SpeakEasy and the textbook Professional Communication: Effective Written and Spoken Messages. Teaching and Consulting
Jane also delivers regular courses for the Research Office and within faculties of Law, Commerce and Science. Corporate clients include GIBB, @Vantage, Aurecon, Old Mutual, Woolworths, Investec, KPMG, the Botswana National Productivity Centre, PriceWaterHouseCooper, Anglo Platinum and Hulett Aluminium. Community / Government and NGO clients include Parliament, Cape Town City Council, Special Investigating Unit, Raymond Ackerman School of Entrepreneurship, Cape Chamber of Commerce, and the National Botanical Institute. Jane English’s research focus is women in construction and explores issues such as communication, employment, training and skills acquisition. This offers practical outcomes, such as a programme developed for Murray & Roberts Construction Cape, with a Xhosa and Zulu-speaking trainer, addressing communications challenges arising from the diverse cultural mix. Jane has also addressed numerous construction industry conferences such as the Tripartite Meeting on the Construction Industry in the 21st Century, Geneva and the annual international CIB conference.
